The Lipshutz group is focused on research associated with synthetic organic chemistry with a heavy emphasis on green chemistry. The goals include development of new technologies aimed at (1) getting organic solvents out of organic reactions, using minimum amounts of recyclable water as the reaction medium; (2) reducing the need for endangered metal catalysts, especially Pd, to ppm levels, and (3) enabling reactions to be run under very mild conditions (i.e., between rt and 45 °C) thereby minimizing by-product formation and maximizing overall efficiencies; (4) merging chemo-catalysis with bio-catalysis, where both types of reactions are utilized in the common medium:  water.
