NOTE: Many programs need to be started from within a Unix shell. You can open a Unix shell window by following the directions below.
  1. First open a Unix shell by finding the Toolchest menu.

  2. Toolchest
  3. Click on the Desktop option.
  4. Click on the Open Unix Shell option.
A window will appear with the title winterm. When you place the mouse over this window, it's border will become highlighted. The text on the screen of this window will be known as the command prompt in this help file.

Chemistry Software
Sybyl

To start Sybyl,

  1. At the command prompt, type "sybyl".
  2. Press "Enter".
You have to start Sybyl from within a terminal window.

To get more help, you can open the online Help pages once you've started the program. Just click on the "Help" option from the menu bar at the top of the screen.


Gaussian 94

To run a Gaussian 94 job,

  1. At the command prompt, type "subg94".
  2. Enter a space and type the name of your input file.
  3. Press "Enter".
The program will prompt you to confirm the names of the input file, the output file, and the queue to which you want to submit the job.

Gaussian 98

To run a Gaussian 98 job,

  1. Type "subg98" at the command prompt.
  2. Enter a space and type the name of your input file.
  3. Press "Enter".
As with Gaussian 94, the program will promt you to confirm the names of the input file, output file and queue.

MacroModel

To start MacroModel,

  1. At the command prompt, type "macromodel".
  2. Press "Enter".

Mathematica

To start Mathematica,

  1. At the command prompt, type "mathematica".
  2. Press "Enter".

Cambridge Structural Database

To start CSD,

  1. At the command prompt, type "quest -j junk".
  2. junk is the jobname where your output will be stored
  3. Press "Enter".

Communications Software
Netscape

To start Netscape,

  1. Type "netscape" at the command prompt.
  2. Press "Enter".
Note that the first time you start Netscape it will take several minutes to start. Alternatively, you can
  1. Select Internet from the Toolchest menu.
  2. Select Open Web Browser.

Telnet

To connect to a remote server,

  1. Type "telnet" at the command prompt.
  2. Enter a space and type the IP address for the remote server.
  3. Press "Enter".
Please note that some programs that ordinarily work when you telnet to a server, may not work due to the program's inability to recognize the SGI terminal.

FTP

To send or get files from a remote server,

  1. Type "ftp" at the command prompt in a Unix shell (winterm) window.
  2. Enter a space and type the IP address of the remote server.
  3. Press "Enter".
alternatively, you can
  1. Select Internet from the Toolchest menu.
  2. Select Icon view of an FTP site.
This will open a window, but you will not be connected to a remote server until you enter the IP address of the server in the text box that follows the "ftp://".

Pine

To send and receive mail,

  1. Type "pine" at the command prompt in a Unix shell (winterm) window.
  2. Press "Enter".
If you've never used the Pine application before, you can press "?" to get help once the program has started.

Miscellaneous
Jot

If you need a simple text editor that doesn't require you to open it within a Unix shell, you can use Jot.

  1. Open the Icon Config window.
  2. Select the Applications tab.
  3. Double-click on the "jot" application using the left mouse button.
A window should open with a blinking cursor. You can begin typing your document. You can edit an existing document by simply opening that file.
  1. Select File from the menu bar.
  2. Select Open.
  3. Choose the file you want to open.
  4. Click the "OK" button.
Although you don't have to open "Jot" from within a Unix shell, you can.
  1. At the command prompt, type "jot".
  2. Press "Enter".

Pico

If you're familiar with the editing capabilities of Pine, then you should find the text editor "Pico" easy to use.

  1. At the command prompt of a Unix shell, type "pico".
  2. Press "Enter".
Once your in the program, you can get help by pressing "Ctrl-G".
