Applications

In the Applications page of the Icon Catalog, you will find a some web pages relating to Netscape (AboutNetscapeMessenger and NetscapeMail) and several applications.

Among the applications are SoftWindows, acroread, jot, nedit, and showcase.

To open any of these applications, just double-click on them with the left mouse button.

  1. SoftWindows95
    "SoftWindows95" is an emulator. It allows you to simulate the desktop environment that you get with a PC running Windows 95.
  2. acroread
    "Acroread" allows you to read files that have been saved in "portable document format" (".pdf" files). These are documents that have been written using Adobe Acrobat. Often online journals use this format for their articles
  3. jot
    "Jot" is a text editor that allows you to view and modify simple text files.
  4. nedit
    "Nedit" allows you to view and modify text files. It has slightly more options than "jot".
  5. showcase
    "Showcase" is a graphics program that allows you to create and modify simple graphics files.

Collaboration

In the Collaboration page of the Icon Catalog you will find some web pages (AboutNetscapeMessenger, NetscapeMail, and outbox) and three applications.

Among the applications are annotator, inperson, and peoplepages. To open any of the applications, just double-click on them with the left mouse button.

  1. annotator
    "Annotator" is a program that allows you to view and manipulate various kinds of graphical media files.
  2. inperson
    "Inperson" allows you to make person-to-person calls from your computer. Do not use this applications since the SGI's have not been configured to make use of this program.
  3. peoplepages
    "Peoplepages" allows you to create and maintain online addressbooks.

ControlPanels

In the ControlPanels page, you will find applications that control your SGI environment. Below is a list of the control panels and their functions.

  1. audiopanel
    "Audiopanel" controls volume as well as input and output sources.
  2. background
    "Background" allows you to change the background colors.
  3. colorscheme
    "Colorscheme" changes the color scheme that determines the color of window borders, etc.
  4. desktop
    "Desktop" changes properties that affect the way files are displayed on your desktop.
  5. display
    "Display" changes the way your screen displays. You probably shouldn't change any of these settings.
  6. flatpanel
    You won't be able make use of this control panel unless you have a Silicon Graphics Flat Panel 1600SW.
  7. iconviews
    "Iconviews" affects the way icons are displayed (size, etc.) in windows.
  8. keyboard
    "Keyboard" allows you to change the repeat rate and the repeat delay for the keyboard.
  9. language
    "Language" lets you define your country, language, keyboard, and time zone variables.
  10. monpanel
    You won't be able to use this control panel unless you have a flat panel adapter.
  11. mouse
    "Mouse" lets you change the mapping to the mouse buttons, how fast the mouse moves across the screen, and the "double-click" speed.
  12. screensaver
    "Screensaver" allows you to select and set a particular screen saver.
  13. sounds
    "Sounds" activates or deactivates various sounds associated with performing functions.
  14. syserrpanel
    "Syserrpanel" enables or disables error alerts.
  15. utilities
    "Utilities" allows you to set default editor and viewer utilities.
  16. videopanel
    "Videopanel" displays the capabilities of any video devices attached to your SGI. It also allows you to change the device settings.
  17. windows
    "Windows" lets you change the way the toolchest is displayed, and the manner in which windows are opened and moved.

DataTranslators

On the DataTranslators page of the Icon Catalog, you'll find applications that allow you to convert between various 3D graphics formats. Most of the converters take files into the "iv" ("Inventor") format.


Demos

On the Demos page of the Icon Catalog, you'll find a variety of programs demo and shareware versions of games. You'll also find programs that demonstrate the graphics capabilities of the SGI's.


DesktopTools

On the DesktopTools page, you find several programs that were available on older versions of the SGI (e.g. Indy's). Some of the programs and their descriptions are listed below.

  1. clock
    "Clock" displays an online clock.
  2. colorview
    "Colorview" allows you to display a long list of colors.
  3. desktophelp
    "Desktophelp" provides quick general help for using the SGI.
  4. gr_osview
    "Gr_osview" gives a graphical display of how the CPU is being used.
  5. ical
    "Ical" gives you the current month's calendar.
  6. infosearch
    If "infosearch" is installed on a computer it allows the user to quickly search for help on a given topic. This program might not be enabled on the SGI's.
  7. insight
    "Insight" is a library of online help files that contain often detailed information about the programs available on the SGI's.
  8. mailbox
    "Mailbox" notifies you of when you have mail.
  9. rcpDevice
    "RcpDevice" program allows you to copy files to and from remote systems, if permission is granted on the remote system.
  10. showmap
    "Showmap" displays a color map.
  11. xcalc
    "Xcalc" is an online scientific calculator.
  12. xclock
    "Xclock" displays an online clock.
  13. xfontsel
    "Xfontsel" displays various fonts.
  14. xpsview
    "Xpsview" displays PostScript files.
  15. xshocmap
    "Xshocmap" shows a color map.
  16. xwininfo
    "Xwininfo" allows you to get information about a particular window.
  17. xwsh
    "Xwsh" opens a Unix shell window.

DeveloperMagic

The programs in the DeveloperMagic page assist you in creating and packaging software.

While it is unlikely that you'll ever need to use these programs, if you do try to make use of them, it's best to start with "swpkg".


MediaTools

The programs on the MediaTools page allow you to run, save, and in some cases modify various types of multimedia. Below is a listing of the applications found on the MediaTools page.

    These applications allow you to play music CD's.
  2. compview
    "Compview" allows you to view an image and compress it.
  3. datman
    "Datman" allows you to read data from a DAT drive.
  4. Image_editor
    "Image_editor" allows you to edit SGI image files.
  5. imgcopy
    "Imgcopy" allows you to copy part of an input image file to an output image file.
  6. imginfo
    "Imginfo" gives you information about an image such as it's size, data type, color model, file format, etc.
  7. imgview
    "Imgview" allows you to view images.
  8. imgworks
    "Imgworks" lets you view, manipulate and modify images.
  9. mediaconvert
    "Mediaconvert" lets you change the format of audio, image, and video files.
  10. mediaplayer
    "Mediaplayer" is a program that lets you play movie or audio files.
  11. mediarecorder
    "Mediarecorder" records movies, images and sounds.
  12. midikeys
    "Midikeys simulates a piano keyboard.
  13. moviemaker
    "Moviemaker" allows you to compose and edit multi-track movie files with video, image and audio.
  14. soundeditor
    "Soundeditor" lets you record and edit sound files.
  15. soundplayer
    "Soundplayer" lets you play AIFF, AIFF-C, MIDI, MPEG-1, Sun/NeXT, and Microsoft WAV sound files.
  16. soundtrack
    The "Soundtrack" program is for creating and editing multitrack audio files.
  17. syntheditor
    "Syntheditor" is for creating, hearing and modifying MIDI files.
  18. synthpanel
    The "Synthpanel" can be used to mix and experiment with MIDI sounds. It should facilitate the process of synthesizing music
  19. videoin & videoout
    "videoin" and "videoout" allow you to simultaneously record and view video.
  20. videopanel
    The "videopanel" displays the capabilities of installed video devices

O2Demos

The applications in the O2Demos page of the Icon Catalog demonstrate the graphics capabilities of the SGI's.


PerfTools

The applications in the PerfTools page of the Icon Catalog are only useful for the system administrator in that they provide information about how the system is performing.


Printing

The programs in the Printing page of the Icon Catalog allow you change your printer selection, as well as providing information about printers and print jobs.

  1. PrintPanel
    "PrintPanel" allows you to change options about how your print jobs are handled.
  2. PrintStatus
    "PrintStatus" will give a report on the status of print jobs that you've submitted to the print queue.
  3. Printers
    "Printers" lists the printers to which your computer is attached or networked.

SupportTools

The programs in the SupportTools page of the Icon Catalog provide links Silicon Graphics, Inc. for customer support.

If there is a problem with the SGI that you are using, do not contact Silicon Graphics, Inc. without first contacting Paul Weakliem.


WebTools

There are many web pages on the WebTools page of the Icon Catalog, but there are a couple of programs that are helpful in accessing the World-Wide Web and in creating web pages of your own.

  1. CosmoCreate
    "CosmoCreate" is a program that lets you easily create and modify web pages.
  2. netscape
    "netscape" is a web browser application. It's likely that you're using "netscape" to view these help pages.

WhatsNew

The programs in the WhatsNew page of the Icon Catalog are new to the SGI systems.

  2. Welcome_to_SGI
    "Welcome_to_SGI" is really a link to a web page that will give instructions on how to install programs, etc. on the SGI.
  3. infosearch
    "Infosearch" is a program that gives quick online help. Normally, when you click on the Help option at the top of most menu bars, it opens up an "infosearch" page.
  4. nedit
    "Nedit" is a text editor.
