Research: Bioinspired Hardness Gradient Materials Through Metal-ion Crosslinking

My research focuses on characterizing the mechanical properties of the outer protective cuticle of mussel holdfast fibers as well as elucidating the underlying material composition. From this we hope new design paradigms can be distilled resulting in synthesis of better coating materials allowing protection of materials undergoing significant strain. The outcome of this research could have major impact in the field of medicine (protection of implants) and electronics (protection of flexible electronics).
