We aim to prepare chemically synthesized materials that mimic the mechanical properties of Nereis jaws. These jaws contain a predominantly protein matrix that is crosslinked by metal ions to impart hardness and load-bearing properties. They also exhibit gradients in the metal-ion concentrations in different regions of the jaws, correlating with the hardness of that region. We are working to prepare chemical polymeric blends that have such gradients and that exhibit mechanical robustness through metal-ion crosslinking.
