The syllabus contains a suggested format for the quarter, however it can be modified. If you are interested in a certain topic related to the course, you are free to propose your own lab. In addition, if you would like to use more advanced instruments, this will be possible with advanced notice. I highly encourage critical thinking and expect that you will understand every aspect of what you are doing in the lab. In other words, don't perform an experiment just to get it done. Your goal should be to learn as much as possible, showing self motivation and organization. Schedule: A schedule of assignments is attached to this syllabus. You are expected to reference it regularly and know what is due. DO NOT loose it. Grading: You will be graded on the following topics (point value) Technique Grade: Starting this quarter, you will receive a daily grade based on organization, preparedness, and lab technique. Attendance: You are required to attend every lab. In case of an emergency, you must notify me of your absence before lab starts. If you are late to class, your technique grade will reflect this. Safety: Safety glasses are required at all times. You must check the MSDS of any chemical you will use in order to understand the hazards involved with it. Chemical Request List: The Friday before a project, you will submit any chemicals and materials you need to perform the experiment the next week. You must send it to your TA by e-mail and send carbon copies to all of your lab partners. The subject should be 'Chem 2AC Request List.' It must contain the chemical, the quantity, and the reaction for which it will be used, including an attached link to the MSDS. If you are missing any of the above you will loose points. ASSIGNMENTS: Technique Lab Report: This report is hand written in your laboratory notebook. Each person is responsible for his or her report. On the due date a carbon copy of the report will be turned in. The report should have the following sections: Copyright © 2009 The Regents of the University of California
