Trevor Hayton Lab

Welcome to the Hayton group in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California, Santa Barbara. We are trying to solve a wide range of problems in energy science, nanochemistry, and nuclear fuel clean-up.   We accomplish these goals with the synthesis and characterization of transition metal, lanthanide, and actinide complexes, as well as metal nanoclusters. Once synthesized, we try to understand their fundamental properties and reactivity.  Students in the Hayton group learn a wide range of skills:

  • Synthesis of organometallic and organic compounds using rigorous air-free procedures
  • Use of many spectroscopic and analytical techniques, including NMR and EPR spectroscopies, X-ray crystallography, cyclic voltammetry, SQUID magnetometry
  • Interdisciplinary understanding of the importance of sustainability and energy science
  • Working with collaborators to attain a common goal

Our group meetings are scheduled for Thursdays, 5:00-7:00pm in PSBN 4606.

Interested in joining the lab?  We are always looking for exceptional students who want to make a difference!  Undergraduate and graduate student who are interested in our research should contact Prof. Hayton.
