Bio: Dr. Bazan obtained his B.Sc. from the University of Ottawa. Moving to the US, he obtained his Ph.D. from MIT, and was a postdoctoral fellow at CalTech working with John Bercaw. He joined the UCSB Chemistry Department in July 1998 as Professor of organic chemistry.

Current Research

We have an active program of research which bridges areas of organic chemistry, organometallic chemistry, polymers and materials science. One major research effort is focused upon the synthesis of conjugated emissive polymers and their use in fabricating new devices.

In a second area, we are researching the design of organometallic catalysts for mediation of polymerization reactions that can be used to convert petroleum feedstocks into useful organic intermediates. This research, which has lead to the development of catalysts with a very high selectivity for production of short-chain alpha-olefins, has received widespread attention with recent reports in C&E News (October 6, 1997) and in Science (October 3, 1997).
