Bio

Before coming to Santa Barbara in 1967, Dr. Millikan received his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in 1957 and carried out research during the next ten years at the General Electric Research Lab. Professor Millikan is best known for his studies of vibrational energy transfer in gases, and the first observation of vibrational fluorescense for any molecule. He was the co-discoverer of the molecule BO2, which is responsible for the green color of boron containing flames. Although Dr. Millikan retired in 1992, after 25 years of service, he continues teaching as needed on recall, editing the alumni newsletter periodically, and developing his light front theory of the electron and its excited states. He passed away in September 2019.
