Application Instructions for U.S. Citizens or Permanent residents

Deadlines: January 12, 2010 for Financial Aid, February 26, 2010 - Final (by Midnight PST)

U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents are invited to apply to the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Graduate Program. Your electronic application will be composed of the UCSB Graduate Division on-line application, supplementary forms required by the Graduate Division, statement of purpose, official transcripts, letters of recommendation and official GRE scores.

To be admitted to graduate status, the basic requirement is a bachelor's degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution, with a major appropriate to the proposed graduate program and a grade point average or equivalent of a 3.0 or above. Applications are considered as received. For consideration for our top fellowships and financial support, complete applications must be received by January 12, 2010. All students are required to take the GRE (the Chemistry Subject Test is recommended, but not required).

Application Checklist

  1. Complete Graduate Division On-line Application and pay the $70 application fee.

  2. From the Graduate Division website, print two copies of the Statement of Purpose Coversheet (insert link https://www.graddiv.ucsb.edu/admissions/forms/). Complete these forms and mail with two copies of your Statement of Purpose to the address listed below.

  3. Have two official transcripts sent from all Colleges and Universities attended to the address listed below.

  4. From the Graduate Division website, please follow the detailed instructions on how to submit your letters of recommendation online. If you are unable to submit your letters of recommendation online, you may print three copies of the Letter of Recommendation Coversheet. Give the Letter of Recommendation Coversheets to your recommenders and request that they be sent with your letters of recommendation to the address listed below.

  5. Request the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to report official GRE scores to the UCSB Graduate Division; the institution code is 4835. A department code is not required. Only the GRE general exam is required for admission, the Chemistry Subject Test is recommended, but not required.
