New Students

Fellowships Applications
New graduate students with outstanding qualifications are nominated by the Department for one of the fellowships in the linked list. A student who holds one of these fellowships enters graduate school as a graduate student researcher rather than a teaching assistant. In order to be eligible for departmental and campus-wide graduate fellowships, UCSB graduate applicants must have submitted their entire application for admission by January 15th.

External Grant Applications for New and Continuing Students

For external support of your graduate research, you are encouraged to apply for fellowships from the NIH and NSF. Please investigate potential awards on the following databases. Note some applications must be submitted by October of the year preceding enrollment in the Department.

The Internship Program of the National Academies
is designed to engage graduate and postdoctoral students in science and technology policy and to familiarize them with the interactions among science, technology, and government.

California Sea Grant State Fellow Program
California Sea Grant's State Fellow Program provides a unique educational opportunity for graduate students who are interested both in marine resources and in the policy decisions affecting those resources.

Lawrence Livermore Postdoctoral Fellowship Program
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has established a prestigious postdoctoral fellowship program. The purpose of this Fellowship is to allow Fellows to pursue cutting-edge science and to stimulate ideas for cross-fertilization.

David Boren Graduate Fellowships
NSEP David Boren Fellowships are for a minimum of one and a maximum of six academic semesters (24 months). NSEP emphasizes a diverse range of fields of study, including business, political science, religion, international affairs, science, engineering, health, law, economics, anthropology, language, history, cultural studies and other social sciences. All Graduate students are eligible and should apply for this every fall quarter.
