About Us

Think of 230 people working together to provide first-class educational opportunities for students. Think of them working together to do significant research in Chemistry and Biochemistry. Give them great facilities and a yearly budget of some 13 million dollars. That is what our department is about. If this piques your interest, and if you are qualified, we invite you to join us.

A superior quality research and teaching environment is critical to success in graduate school and your later profession. According to a recent report by the Institute of Scientific Information, publications by faculty members from our department were the 3rd most cited in the nation among all chemical departments (http://www.isinet.com/). Our Department also ranked 6th in productivity. With dedication of a new building in 1995 and major renovation of the old building in 1998, we offer state-of-the-art facilities. Strong interactions with other outstanding departments and Organized Research Units on campus further enrich the environment for chemical sciences at UCSB.

Our medium size department allows for more personal contact among faculty, students, staff and visiting scholars. Yet, it has the resources of larger departments. In addition, the campus has an unequaled geographical setting, sitting directly on the Pacific Ocean with the Channel Islands to the south and the Santa Ynez Mountains to the north. Santa Barbara which lies immediately to the east (http://www.santabarbara.org), is noted for its beauty, sophistication and cultural heritage. All the amenities and necessities to work and play hard are available to graduate students in our Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

Construction of our new building (occupied in 1995) and renovation of our old building (completed in 1998) provided us with a superb physical plant. We carry out research in the areas of Biochemistry, Inorganic/Analytical Chemistry, Materials Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Physical/Theoretical Chemistry. In support of these activities, the department maintains a machine shop, a glass shop, an electronics shop, an NMR facility, a mass spectrometer facility, two X-ray structure facilities, a laser equipment pool, and two stockrooms. All of these are staffed by trained personnel who are available to help students solve their research problems. All of the offices, labs, and classrooms are wired for high-speed internet access. We have a full-time staff of professionals to help with network and PC problems.

Other major equipment in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry includes a wide variety of state-of-the-art research instrumentation dedicated to different research projects. Examples are pulse laser flash photolysis systems, molecular beam systems, ion cyclotron resonance spectrometers, high vacuum systems for surface studies, as well as a full arsenal of the lasers, FTIR, UV/vis, and EPR spectrometers, gas and liquid chromatographs, ultracentrifuges, etc. necessary for the prosecution of chemical research.
