UCSB Chem/Biochem Ph.D. graduate named Research Leader of the Year by Scientific American.
Angela
Belcher, presently a professor at the MIT, who received her Ph.D. in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry under the Mentorship of UCSB Professors Galen Stucky, Paul Hansma and Daniel Morse, has been named this week by Scientific American as "The Research Leader of the Year", #1 on the "Scientific American 50 list". Dr. Belcher joined the Graduate program in Chemistry after have received her Bachelor's degree from UCSB's College of Create Studies. Her work with the three UCSB professors on biomineralization is widely considered to have been an essential ingredient that triggered a broad effort to establish the UCSB Materials Research Laboratory. Dr. Belcher is being recognized for her work in Bio-inspired materials chemistry. Her accomplishments show the possibilities that can arise from a multidisciplinary graduate program, for which this campus is famous.

UCSB Grad Angela Belcher Honored with Genius Award
Angela
Belcher attended Santa Barbara City College and transferred to
UCSB as an undergraduate in the College of Creative Studies. She completed
her doctorate at UCSB in 1997 followed by two years of post-doctoral
research at UCSB. Currently she is a Professor of materials science and
biological engineering at MIT.
"She
has genetically modified viruses (strains that only attack bacteria
and are harmless to humans) to interact with solutions of inorganic
semiconductors, yielding self-assembling metal films and wires with
diameters in the low tens of nanometers."
