Faculty-Staff 2004 Softball Match

The thrill of victory . . . and the agony of defeat!

The Staff beat the Faculty in the first annual softball playoff game on
Apr 29'th by a score of 13-11. The faculty was off to a roaring start
with some slugging by the "B"-boys of Brown, Buratto, and Bode and then
'Terrible Tim' Deming hit a ball out of the park, nearly taking out a
window in Physics. The staff countered with some slugging by the
Machine shop crew and Deedrea, called back from vacation specially for
the game. The faculty held the staff to only a few runs by their solid
fielding on the left side by deVries and Chemlka. The faculty added to
their lead in the second with Dean Moskovits pinch hitting and then
Pettus swatting the ball off into the perpetually watered swamp in deep
left field while Wodtke and Sons added a few more runs. The staff were
quickly dispatched in the second by excellent plays by staff members
Johnson (pitching) and Dunson (catching) (...I thought they were on our
team!). The game went back and forth, and Wu lost any credibility of
his "I've never played this game" as he got on base again and again. Mo
and Ericka also were solid players, when they actually remembered that
it was their turn to bat. The staff then started taking advantage of
the dwindling faculty, many of whom mistakenly left at the 7'th inning
stretch. Corlei led off the inning as the staff batted through the
entire order to take the lead. The faculty put up one final heroic
effort in the ninth, but Weakliem saved the game by robbing Demming of a
home run (after which Weakliem immediately declared his retirement from
baseball) and Johnson catching Wodtke's shot deep to center to end the
game. The staff team was going to carry Capt. Terry Hart off the
field on their shoulders, but then decided that it wasn't as good an
idea as it originally sounded. A good time was had by all with the
faculty already calling for a rematch next year.
