Chem 6AL Organic Chemistry Laboratory Winter 2009
What's New?
20 MAR 2009
The final has been graded and posted on Grade Checker. The average and median were a 75, the high a 94 and the low a 44. The column on Grade Checker listed as "Final Grade" is the grade for the entire course and will be the grade posted to GOLD. If there are any inaccuracies in your lab report, quiz, or technique scores...you have until tomorrow at 5pm to let me know.
Have a good spring break!! Please look me up next quarter or whenever you are taking 6B if you need any help. Cheers!
Justin

All scores from TA's are in. Please verify that your scores are correct. I need you to email me if you find any discrepancies BEFORE 5 P.M. FRIDAY.
18 MAR 2009
I have updated your scores from your TA's on Grade Checker...minus Sean and Andy's sections. As soon as I get those, I will normalize again. Please verify that your scores are correct. If they aren't, please talk to me after you are done with the final tonight so we can get it cleared up. We will have a period from now (or if you are in Sean or Andy's section as soon as they come in) until Friday 20 MAR 09 at 5pm to correct your score before I submit them to egrades. The final will be graded Thursday afternoon and Thursday evening your final grades will be on Grade Checker. Any problems...please let me know before Friday at 5pm.
13 MAR 2009
Several students pointed out a mistake on the quiz bank 8. Part 2 of the IR section states that the chemical formula is C4 H10 O....that is incorrect. It should be C6 H10 O2. I apologize for the mistake and thank those who let me know.
9 MAR 2009
Posted the lecture notes for lecture 8 showing the correction. It turns out the book I got the problem from was wrong...sheesh. Anyways...I corrected the problem and put it on the next slide. Also, a slide that explains a bit how I determined the structure is included.
4 MAR 2009
Scores for Midterm 2 are up on Grade Checker. Please report any errors. The average was a 69, the high a 95, and the low a 31. I will give the score sheets to your TA's so they can pass them out.
2 MAR 2009
Midterm 2 key is up. There were a couple typos...not sure what to do about the NMR typos yet. Let me go to the scoring place tomorrow and see how everyone did first.
27 FEB 2009
Posted Experiment 7 files. Spectra files of experimental compounds can be found as well.
23 FEB 2009
Reminder that Midterm 2 is Monday the 2nd of March. Bring a pencil or pen and a calculator. You don't need a Par-score sheet, one will be provided. The material will be primarily from lectures 4,5 and 6. Emphasis on IR, TLC and NMR. Make sure to do the reading assignments and the quiz bank questions for these weeks.
19 FEB 2009
Experiment 6 files posted! The quiz bank questions come mostly from the reading assignments, so be sure to stay on top of those.
10 FEB 2009
Grade Checker is up. To begin, go to the signup page. After you have registered, go the the GradeChecker website and sign on. The assignment of grades is not perfect, but a rough estimate. They are normalized by TA...so if you have a really hard TA your score is worth a bit more and vice versa. If I didn't normalize, then students with a hard TA may never achieve the points needed for the grade they deserve.
You may have done really well on the midterm, but have a lower grade than you expect. This is because right now the lab portion is worth more than the exams. But if you continue to do well on the midterms and final, you will see your grade go much higher because the midterms and final portion is worth 60% of your grade. Also, some students may not have all of their assignments entered...probably due to either not turning them in or your TA hasn't graded them. I will update the grades on a weekly basis so you can monitor how you are doing. Any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
9 FEB 2009
Posted lecture notes with ink for lecture 5. Sorry about the explanation of NMR tonight...I could tell it was very poor. I will try to do much better next lecture. It's not easy to explain the theory. The actual interpretation is much more straightforward. Thank you for your patience. I am more than willing to help you if you make an appointment or use office hours. Sometimes it takes more than a lecture to understand something, especially topics as abstract as these. Don't forget next monday (Feb 16th) is a holiday. No labs or lecture next week.
5 FEB 2009
Posted experiment 5 and quiz bank 5. There are also practice problems for IR and NMR posted in the Experiment 5 folder as well as a few videos about how to do TLC. We will finish up IR, discuss TLC and begin discussion on NMR next lecture.
4 FEB 2009
I made some errors on the midterm key and have reposted the answers. Check out 5, 9, and 31. Your TA's will have your score sheets and pass them out next lab. Be advised that they are scored without these changes in mind.
2 FEB 2009
The midterm and key have been posted under the "Old Exams" tab to the left. I will grade them tomorrow afternoon and hopefully the grade-checker will be up so you can see your grades...cross your fingers.
Midterm 1 is tonight. You don't need a par score sheet, I'll give you one. Please bring a pencil or pen and a calculator. I will lecture for about 45 mins and then pass out the test, which you will have 60 minutes to do about 35 multiple choice problems.
Experiment 4 files are posted.
22 JAN 2009
Updated the Experiment 3 files. Please disregard any files that were previously posted for the future experiments. The course website was copied over from last quarter and there are some changes. I apologize if you already printed out stuff ahead of time. Trust me, you want me to do this...all I'm doing is decreasing the number of quiz bank questions and throwing out the bad ones.
7 JAN 2009
Syllabus had a few discrepancies. In lecture, I mentioned that a table of reagents was required for all experiments, but it said expts 5-9 in the syllabus. You need a table of reagents for every lab. This has been corrected. Thank you to those that noticed it. If you find any mistakes...please! please! let me know.
I forgot to mention that there is a lab textbook on reserve at the library for those of you who are unable to purchase one.
Sometimes, your browser doesn't download the web pages you have visited previously. For that reason, it is always a good idea to click the refresh button when you visit a website that you will frequent like this one.
6 JAN 2009
Updated the Experiment 1 pdf file. It was cut off at the bottom and wasn't clear on the Refractive Index part. We aren't doing any Refractive Index experiments in lab, but you should read the chapter associated with it in your book.
Added the What's New page! Also fixed some links and posted the Reading Assignments.
