What's New?

6/15/09

Final Grades are on the Grade Checker.  I will post them to GOLD tomorrow.  I will release the exam key as soon as one last person takes the exam...hopefully that will be today.  The average was a 75, high a 95 and low a 20.  Email me if you have any questions.  I'll be on campus this week too...pretty much normal business hours 9-5.

6/9/09

Final Tonight ya'll.  Bring a pencil or pen and a calculator.  You might want to bring a ruler to help you analyze the spectra (especially IR).  Don't worry about the scantron, you will get one from me.  See you tonight...730pm CHEM 1179.

5/19/09

Midterm 2 Key Posted under old exams tab.

5/15/09

Midterm 2 results posted on Grade Checker.  Average = 66, Median = 67, High = 95, Low = 27.  I will post the key next week after the students affected by the fire have a chance to take it.  See you Monday!

Please use office hours or make an appointment if you need extra help.  I am really willing to help out and sometimes things click better one on one.  NMR is a really tough subject, so don't think you are the only person confused.  Just try your best to get in the book and read about it and do the problems in the previous exams.

Can you take an anonymous mid-course survey for me?  Follow this link and it should only take a few mins.

Made some small changes to the reading assignments page to better reflect where we are in the book and where we are going.  Check it out and make sure you are up to date.

4/21/09

The grades for the midterm were posted on Grade Checker.  You will also see your current grade in the course.  *Please note* that I arrived at these grades by assuming the midterm was worth 60% (or the total of all exams in this course) and the lab portion was worth 40%.  I did this because, as I said in class, it is a very good indicator of how you will do on subsequent exams.  Most students keep the same level of performance on exams throughout the quarter.  Also remember that the curve is applied at the end of the course and this is only a representation of your grade at this place and time in the quarter.

Midterm Average = 65, Median = 65, High = 95, Low = 15

Every question was answered correctly by the class at 50% or higher, so no questions were thrown out this exam. A 65 is the B/B- break for the midterm. A 73.6% overall in the class is the B/B- break currently.

There was an error in the first Midterm Key posted...number 24 should be B. I corrected this and posted a new key.

4/20/09

Midterm Key is posted under the "old exams" tab.  Also posted the ink files of today's lecture.  I have my office back, so Wednesdays from 2-3 are new office hours...CHEM 2148.

4/20/09

Midterm tonight.  We will start promptly at 5:00 pm and stop at 6:00 and then pick up where we left off for the last hour of class .  Don't worry about bringing a scantron sheet, I will provide one for you.

I wanted to give some extra help for those of you who have had difficulty getting the CRC handbook file.  First, go to http://www.hbcpnetbase.com/ .  You should see a Table of Contents on the far left of the page.  Look for "Section 3: Physical Constants of Organic Compounds" and click the + to expand it. Then click on the first link under that menu, which says "Physical Constants of Organic Compounds."  It will then download a very large file (this may take a long time depending upon your connection).  You have to be on a school network to make this work, otherwise it will not let you gain access.  Once you have the file, save it on your computer so you don't have to do this again.  Now you have a 20 lb. book reference in your computer that is electronically searchable! It is a pdf file so you can search for what you are looking for instead of leafing through all 540 pages.

4/14/09

Grade Checker is up and running.  Here is the link http://www.chem.ucsb.edu/cgiwrite/grades/ Make sure to create an account first, then log on.  Please report any errors to your TA. I decided not to enter a current grade until after the first midterm, so look for that soon.

Posted the lecture notes from today's lecture under the Experiment 3 file folder.  If you want to do an online tutorial about IR first, in lieu of starting with your text...check out this website:

http://www.cem.msu.edu/~reusch/VirtualText/Spectrpy/InfraRed/infrared.htm

You can also check out http://orgchem.colorado.edu/hndbksupport/irtutor/tutorial.html

Keep in mind we are only covering stretches...not bends, scissoring, rock, etc...  This may be a helpful starting point before you read what your text has to say about IR.

Not an April Fools joke here...but I guess if you go to the main course website and download the syllabus..you get the correct Spring 2009 version.  Apparently, the links on the other pages led to the Winter 2009 syllabus.  Please make sure you do not have a copy of the Winter syllabus.  Some items and details have changed.  I fixed all the links to my knowledge.  Let me know if there are any problems.  Also...if you are having any problems with links, hit the reload button on your browser and it should be good to go.

3/30/09

First lecture just got over.  It's pretty dry material, I'll try to make it more entertaining...not easy with O-Chem.  The stuff is actually pretty cool when you look at the global picture.  Anyways, I just posted the lecture slides with my ink annotations in both powerpoint and pdf.  I will always do this so you can see what I wrote.  Look for the file "Lecture 1 with ink" in the Experiment 1 file directory (under "experiments" on main page).

I mentioned a lab fatality at UCLA.  Here is a link to read about it and what we can do to prevent things like this from happening.  http://www.ehs.ucsb.edu/units/labsfty/labrsc/incidents/otherpdf/UCLA.accident.summary.pdf

See you next Monday.  Let me know if you have any questions.
