NMR Instruments

The UCSB Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry NMR Facility provides access to state of the art NMR experiments. Instrumentation includes a Varian UNITY INOVA 500/51 (installed 1996), a Varian UNITY INOVA 400/54 (1996) and a Varian MERCURY Vx 200/51 (2000). The NMR Facility is capable of handling a wide range of nuclei and solution state techniques.

Varian UNITY INOVA 500 MHz NMR Spectrometer

This spectrometer has all of the features one would expect of a state of the art instrument. It is equipped with three RF channels, pulsed field gradients (PFG), wave form generators, plus capabilities for gradient shimming, indirect detection, oversampling, pulse shaping, and long-term high-stability variable temperature experiments. There are five probes available for this instrument: 5mm (1H/19F) with single axis PFG, 5mm triple resonance indirect detection (1H/13C[X]) with triple axis PFG, 3mm triple resonance (1H/13C/15N) with triple axis PFG, 5mm switchable with single axis PFG, and 10mm direct multinuclear detection (31P/108Ag). Other features include 2- and 3-D NMR and advanced analysis tools including linear prediction and spectral deconvolution. This instrument is used primarily for structural studies of biological systems which require high sensitivity or for experiments that cannot be done on the other instruments in the Facility. The instrument is used mostly by senior graduate students and postdocs who have received NMR training. Advanced reservation is required for prolonged use of this instrument. Walk-in access is possible when the instrument is not otherwise scheduled.

Varian UNITY INOVA 400 MHz NMR Spectrometer
This instrument provides service to the organic and inorganic synthesis groups and is used primarily on a walk-in basis by trained users. It is capable of all contemporary NMR experiments including PFG. There are three probes available for this spectrometer: 5mm auto-NMR (1H/19F/13C/31P), 5mm indirect detection PFG (1H/19F[X]), and 10mm direct multinuclear detection (31P/15N). This instrument is used mostly by graduate students and postdocs who have received NMR training. Advanced reservation of this instrument is required only for long or specialized experiments.

Varian MERCURY Vx 200 MHz NMR Spectrometer
This instrument provides 1H and 13C observation with variable temperature control capability and a carousel autosampler. This instrument is used by undergraduate students in both teaching and research settings.
