Our research interests are in the area of bioinorganic chemistry and metallobiochemistry with an emphasis on the roles of metal ions in the catalytic activity of metalloenzymes as well as mechanisms by which cells acquire metal ions.

Tate Owen, Ph.D.

I study the metal-dependent self-assembly of amphiphilic siderophores using small-angle x-ray/neutron scattering, light scattering, and electron microscopy. Some of these siderophores undergo a micelle-to-vesicle transition in the presence of specific metal cations.

In general, my research focuses on isolation and structure elucidation of new siderophores from marine bacteria. I am also interested in the role of Vanadium Bromoperoxidase in the chemical defense of select marine algae.
